Spine Treatments & Surgery

Searching for an answer to your spine or back problem? You’ll find advanced expertise in leading-edge spine treatments at the Abington Orthopedic & Spine Institute – Jefferson Health. We have knowledge and experience that’s often not available at other hospitals.

Our spine surgeons provide all aspects of spine care, working with rehabilitation physicians (physiatrists) and pain management specialists to bring you relief. This conservative approach to spine conditions gives you options, from medical management and non-surgical treatments to minimally invasive procedures for complex disorders.

We are honored to be named a Blue Distinction Center+ for Spine Surgery® by Independence Blue Cross.

Non-surgical Treatments

Spine conditions, including pain, don’t always need surgery. Your doctor will discuss non-surgical options such as:

  • Medications/rest
  • Interventional procedures
    • Epidural steroid injections
    • Facet joint/median branch blocks
    • Occipital nerve blocks
    • Rhizotomy (radiofrequency)
    • Sacroiliac joint injections
    • Spinal cord stimulators
    • Implantable pain pumps
    • Discography
    • Nucleoplasty
    • Percutaneous disc decompression/IDET
    • Trans-discal biacuplasty
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation
  • Weight loss program
  • Exercise program
  • Smoking cessation classes

Minimally Invasive Procedures

Our spine surgeons excel in advanced treatment methods with the newest technologies, using small (“mini”) incisions and microsurgical techniques. Minimally invasive therapies give you less pain and blood loss, a shorter recovery and faster rehabilitation. Among the minimally invasive spine approaches we offer:

Open Surgery

When minimally invasive procedures are not right for the spine condition or patient, we have longstanding expertise in open surgery and other treatments, including:

  • Fusion techniques
  • Cage procedures
  • Scoliosis or spinal structure surgeries
  • Fracture and dislocation procedures
  • Herniated disc lesion surgery
  • Degenerative spinal condition treatments
  • Trauma injury repair
