Acute Rehabilitation Unit

The Acute Rehabilitation Unit strive to help patients regain the skills and independence they have lost due to illness and injury. Our comprehensive program consists of physical, occupational and speech therapy, social and psychological services, 24-hour rehab nursing and daily medical supervision from our physiatrist (physician specializing in rehabilitation medicine).

During their stay, patients are encouraged to be as active as possible. Each day, patients dress in their own clothing, participate in a minimum of three hours of therapy, enjoy meals in our spacious dining room and socialize with other patients on the unit.

The Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU), located on the 4th floor of the Widener Building, has 23 private patient rooms and provides the personalized care and therapy necessary to improve each patient's overall health and to recover lost functional skills.

The program consists of physical, occupational and speech therapy. Patients strive to achieve their individual goals and are taught the skills they need to continue their therapy at home.

Services Provided

  • Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy (PT) provides a full range of evaluative, preventative and rehabilitative services to those with impairments in physical functioning. Our staff provides patients with comprehensive evaluations, one-to-one education and functional training.

  • Speech Language Pathology

The Speech Language Pathology program is dedicated to improving each patient’s quality of life. Our speech- language pathologists evaluate, treat and manage care for patients with disorders of speech, voice, language, cognition, memory and swallowing disorders. Our speech pathologists provide direct patient care, counseling and education within an interdisciplinary team.

  • Rehabilitation care coordinators

As an integral part of the Rehabilitation Medicine Department, rehabilitation care coordinators facilitate communication between patients (or their caregiver) and their healthcare providers and insurance carriers. In addition, these professionals ensure a safe transition to the next level of care.

  • Occupational Therapy

The Occupational Therapy (OT) program is dedicated to improving our patients’ quality of life by promoting maximal functioning and independence and facilitating reintegration into the community.

Occupational therapists use therapeutic approaches to restore and enhance each patient’s living skills. Patients are trained to resume their daily routines, including dressing, grooming, bathing, toileting, cooking and working.

  • Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Physician

Physiatrists are physicians who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation. They are trained to diagnose, treat, and direct a rehabilitation program and provide the best possible outcomes. Physiatrists oversee each patient’s medical and functional well-being while they are in the Rehabilitation Unit and lead the bi-weekly team conference to coordinate the best possible care for each patient.

  • Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Nursing

Rehabilitation nurses are focused on caring for patients who have been incapacitated by injury or illness. They collaborate with other rehabilitation professionals to address each patient’s specific condition, and develop an appropriate treatment plan. They help each patient regain as much normal function as possible, thereby improving their quality of life.

Patients are expected to be as active as possible during their stay on the ARU. Each day, patients dress in their own clothing, participate in a minimum of three hours of therapy, enjoy meals in our spacious dining room and socialize with other patients.

We welcome referrals from physicians, social workers, case managers, insurance representatives, family members and patients themselves.
