Heart Wall Closure Device
Interventional cardiologists at the Abington Heart and Vascular Institute – Jefferson Health are closing a life-threatening “hole” in the wall of the heart with a minimally invasive procedure.
Our experts use an advanced closure device to treat adults with atrial septal defect, a congenital heart condition.
Closure Device Treatment
The device is a self-expandable double disk implant made from wire mesh and polyester fabric. Our specialists implant it by catheter through the groin to shut the opening in the heart.
When the implant is in place, the device becomes a permanent part of the heart wall. This procedure is an alternative to open-heart surgery.
