Endocrinology is the study of the hormone-producing glands, which include the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, ovaries, testes and pancreas. These glands secrete a variety of hormones that regulate many bodily functions, including: growth and development; bone formation; breakdown of food; reproductive function; blood pressure; and the levels of glucose, cholesterol, calcium and other vital substances. Endocrinologists evaluate and treat disorders of these glands, such as: diabetes; thyroid cancer; thyroid dysfunction; osteoporosis; hypertension; infertility; short stature; cholesterol abnormalities; and calcium imbalance.
