Our ultimate goal is to help patients regain the skills and independence they have lost due to illness and injury. Our comprehensive rehabilitation program consists of physical, occupational and speech therapy, social and psychological services, 24-hour rehab nursing and daily medical supervision from our physiatrist (physician specializing in rehabilitation medicine).

During their stay, patients are encouraged to be as active as possible. Each day, patients dress in their own clothing, participate in a minimum of three hours of therapy, enjoy meals in our spacious dining room and socialize with other patients on the unit.

A Team Approach

We utilize a team approach to therapy at Jefferson Lansdale Hospital. Our rehabilitation team consists of:

  • Physiatrist
  • Rehabilitation Nurses & Nursing Assistants
  • Physical Therapists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Speech Therapists
  • A Social Worker

Families are strongly encouraged to participate in the patient's therapy from start to finish. A successful rehabilitation program depends upon willing participation of the patient and support from their loved ones.

Admission to the Program

Prior to admission, each patient is carefully assessed to determine whether his or her condition will benefit from the level of treatment provided. This assessment is provided at no charge and can be conducted at home or in the hospital by a member of our team. We welcome referrals from physicians, social workers, case managers, insurance representatives, family members and patients themselves. The admission process should be initiated by a physician referral or written order. Medicare, as well as most health insurance carriers, covers acute rehabilitation therapy. The following criteria is recommended for admission:

  • The individual requires at least two forms of therapy (physical, occupational and/or speech therapy).
  • The individual is medically stable.
  • The individual has realistic goals and the potential to achieve them.
  • The individual has the potential to improve function or achieve independence.
  • The individual has an identifiable discharge plan.
  • The individual and family are willing to participate in the rehabilitation program.

Some of the functional limitations that may benefit from a rehabilitation program include:

  • Balance and coordination impairments
  • Weakness or limited motion in arms, legs or trunk
  • Difficulty moving in bed or transferring from one place to another
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Difficulty performing activities of daily living such as eating, bathing, dressing, grooming or homemaking
  • Memory deficits, judgment and safety impairments, speech or language problems in conjunction with physical limitations
  • Inability to work or function in the community as a result of physical impairments
