Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
The Abington Neurosciences Institute – Jefferson Health now offers video-EEG testing in a dedicated Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) at Jefferson Abington Hospital. The unit offers specific insight about a patient’s seizures to help determine how to provide the most effective treatment.
Video-EEG is a more specialized form of an EEG test. The EEG (recording of the brain waves) together with a camera and microphone monitor patients 24 hours a day. This continuous monitoring allows us to observe and review brain wave activity when a seizure or a spell occurs.
Kandan Kulandaivel, MD, who has advanced training in EEG interpretation and epilepsy treatment, directs the patient’s care while in the unit. The video-EEG test usually requires a stay of three to five days in a private room.
