Hip Replacement

US News & World Report Award

Hip replacement can eliminate your hip pain, restore your range of motion and return you to an active life. At Jefferson Health – Abington, we offer advanced minimally invasive surgery, such as anterior hip replacement, a surgical approach from the front of the hip that has revolutionized treatment. Our hip replacement procedures use mini-incisions, resulting in less pain and a faster recovery.

When you choose our experts for hip replacement surgery, we evaluate your hip problems and other health conditions and learn about your lifestyle to determine the best type of surgery for you.

Anterior Approach

This latest replacement procedure, applied from the front of your hip joint, uses a small (three-to-four-inch) incision in the natural opening between your gluteal muscles. The anterior approach does not cut muscles from the pelvis or upper leg bone, the most important muscles for hip function. You have fewer restrictions following surgery, experience less pain and benefit from a quicker return to regular activities, including driving.

Innovative Operating Table

The Abington Orthopedic and Spine Institute – Jefferson Health is one of only a few select hospitals to use the hana® Surgical Table for anterior hip replacement. Unlike conventional surgery tables, the advanced technology of this specialized equipment precisely positions the patient, giving our surgeons better access to the hip and enabling them to take X-rays as they work. The result? Less risk of cutting muscles, ligaments and tendons, and more exact placement of the hip implant.

Posterior Approach

Our mini-posterior approach uses a single three-to-four-inch incision instead of the ten inches required with traditional hip replacement surgery. An incision is made through the back or side of the hip. Muscles are separated from the pelvis and upper leg bone and reattached after the implant is placed.

Whether you have anterior or posterior surgery, the type of implant – ceramic, metal-on-metal or ultra-strong plastic – will depend on what’s best suited to your condition. Talk with your surgeon to learn more.
