Advancing Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality:

The John J. Kelly Institute for Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality

The John J. Kelly Institute for Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality was created in 2017 to lead Abington – Jefferson Health’s journey towards high reliability.  High reliability healthcare organizations consistently deliver high quality care to their patients with a focus and aspiration for zero patient harm as a result of care delivery.

The John J. Kelly Institute for Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality focuses on:

  • Applying knowledge and best practices in the delivery of care.
  • Relentlessly pursuing improvements to quality of care to the patients we serve.

We are committed to:

  • Developing healthcare services that are anchored in evidence-based medicine and are carried forward with processes that are designed to help our staff easily ‘do what is right’ for our patients.
  • Developing clear ‘behavioral-based expectations’ for our staff and leaders.    These behaviors provide tools and approaches for our staff to “speak up for safety” and “check themselves” and their colleagues in a way that ensures that care is being delivered safely.
  • Advancing our staff and leaders in the science of improvement.  We are developing many improvement tools and methods that are being used throughout our organization, at all levels, to continuously work on and make us better.
  • Involving patients and families in the co-design of health care.  We want to provide care that meets our patients’ expectations.  We are developing many ways to listen and incorporate the ideas and observations of our community to help in planning for Abington – Jefferson Health’s future.

Our mission at Jefferson is to improve lives in all we do, every day.
