Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health Names New Chair of Department of Family Medicine

ABINGTON, PA (July 10, 2019) – Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health is pleased to announce the appointment of John J. Russell, MD as chair of the Department of Family Medicine at Abington Hospital. Russell will replace Warren B. Matthews, MD, who served as chair for 33 years.

Russell has 29 years of experience and currently serves as medical director of Abington Family Medicine. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Temple University and received his medical degree from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine.

Russell completed his residency in Family Medicine at Abington Hospital, during which time he served as co-chief resident. In 1993, he joined the Abington medical staff and in 2012 became the director of the Family Medicine Residency program.

Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, Russell is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He is a clinical professor of Family Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. He represents Abington as a member of the Enterprise Medical Advisory Council and is an active member of several medical staff committees including serving as chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and co-chair of the Bio-Ethics Committee.

Russell served as medical staff president from 2010 to 2012 and completed Patient Safety Officer training at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in 2009. He is a nationally known speaker on primary care topics, the co-host of the American Diabetes Association’s monthly podcast, a host of ReachMD’s Book Club podcast series, the author of two textbooks and multiple articles. In addition, he is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2018 and 2019 Top Doctors awards.

Russell resides in his hometown of Dresher with his wife Elena and three children.
