Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health Honored for 90 Percent Hepatitis B Vaccine Rate for Newborns
Abington, PA (July 18, 2018) – Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health has been recognized by the Immunization Action Coalition (IAC) and the Pennsylvania Department of Health for achieving one of the highest reported rates in the state for its work to protect newborns from the hepatitis B virus infection.
Abington Hospital is the newest entry into IAC’s Birth Dose Honor Roll (www.immunize.org/honor-roll/birthdose), which recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that have attained high coverage levels for administering the hepatitis B vaccine at birth. Abington Hospital –Jefferson Health immunized 90 percent of babies in 2017 and took additional steps to prevent the transmission of hepatitis B from mothers to infants immediately before and after birth.
“This achievement is proof of our commitment to providing excellent preventative care for our youngest newborn patients,” said Steven Shapiro, DO, chair, Pediatrics Department, Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health. “I’m proud of our organization and staff members for their commitment to this very important initiative and of the parents of our newborns who make the wise decisions to immunize their children.”
The national standard of care to prevent hepatitis B in babies is to administer the hepatitis B vaccine to all newborns before they leave the hospital or birthing center. This standard is being adopted by centers of healthcare excellence nationwide as a safety net to protect newborns.
“Hospitals and birthing centers have a responsibility to protect babies from life-threatening hepatitis B infection,” said Deborah Wexler, MD, executive director and founder of IAC. “Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health’s commitment to the best practice of hepatitis B vaccination at birth has shown them to be a leader in preventing the transmission of the hepatitis B virus.”
