Leading Oncologist Appointed Director of Abington Hospital’s Cancer Center
ABINGTON, PA (September 30, 2016) – Abington – Jefferson Health is pleased to announce that Steven J. Cohen, MD has been appointed chief of the Medical Oncology Division and director of The Rosenfeld Cancer Center at Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health, as well as vice-chair of the Department of Medical Oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson. An award-winning oncologist who has dedicated his career to cancer research and treatment, he will treat patients in Abington and Center City. Cohen specializes in gastrointestinal cancers.
Cohen attended Cornell University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. He earned his medical degree from Stony Brook University School of Medicine. Cohen completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Temple University Hospital and his fellowship in Medical Oncology and Hematology at Fox Chase Cancer Center.

Cohen is the immediate past chief of Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center and program director of the Hematology/Oncology fellowship program. He is also the immediate past chief medical officer of Fox Chase Cancer Center Partners, which is Fox Chase Cancer Center’s affiliate program.
Cohen serves as a member and chair of several local and national medical committees, including the Gastrointestinal Committee of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, where he chairs the Colorectal Cancer Subcommittee. Cohen is also currently a board member of the Pennsylvania Society of Oncology and Hematology and vice-chair of the National Cancer Institute’s Pancreatic Cancer Task Force of the GI Steering Committee.
He has served as the principal or co-investigator for numerous clinical trials related to chemotherapy, pancreatic cancer, metastatic pancreatic cancer and rectal cancer. His research interests in gastrointestinal cancer focus on the development of new therapies for patients with gastrointestinal cancer.
Cohen has published original work in nearly 100 peer-reviewed publications and is widely regarded as a national expert in the treatment of patients with gastrointestinal cancers. Additionally, Cohen has been a guest lecturer at more than 50 lectures and symposiums. Most recently, in July 2016, he spoke on new colorectal cancer treatments as an invited grand rounds lecturer at Emory University’s Winship Cancer Institute. He has won several awards for his work and research.
