Lansdale Hospital Announces Director of Emergency Services, Mary E. Whelan, MSN, RN, CEN

(Lansdale, PA) August 25, 2009 – Mary E. Whelan, RN has accepted the role of director of Emergency Services at Lansdale Hospital effective August 31, 2009. The announcement was made by Nancy G. Hesse, MSN, RN, CEN, chief nursing officer. "We are pleased to have Mary on the nursing leadership team at Lansdale Hospital, as she is a talented nurse leader. She brings a wealth of nursing experience and will be a real asset to our organization," said Hesse.
In this role, Whelan will have responsibility for the overall management of clinical nursing practice in the Emergency Department. Additionally, she will oversee the development and implementation of the Department's policies, programs and services to ensure that they are evidence-based and consistent with professional nursing standards and practice.
Whelan has over 27 years of emergency nursing experience, most recently as associate director of the Emergency Trauma Center at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington. She has been instrumental in maintaining patient satisfaction scores in excess of 99 percent at the second busiest Emergency Trauma Center in the Philadelphia region. Whelan has presented at national leadership conferences, including the Emergency Nurses Association in 2009. Currently, Whelan serves on the national Board for Certification in Emergency Nursing.
In 2004, Whelan received Abington Memorial Hospital's Williamson Award, which recognizes employees for distinguished service, dedication and commitment to their hospital's patients and staff. In this same year, she was recognized by her peers for outstanding efforts earning her the National Distinguished Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) Award.
Whelan received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Holy Family University and her Masters in Nursing Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania with a minor in Organizational Dynamics in 2008. A Warminster resident, she enjoys swimming, golfing, running and is active in her children's sporting and academic activities.
