Abington Memorial Hospital is Named One of America's Best Hospitals
ABINGTON, PA (July 7, 2006) - U.S. News & World Report magazine has included Abington Memorial Hospital in its annual "America's Best Hospitals" ranking. Out of 5,189 hospitals, only 3 percent (176 in all) are ranked in one or more of the 16 specialty areas.
"We are honored that our otolaryngology division was chosen to be included on this list of the best of the best," says John J. Kelly, M.D., chief of staff and chief patient safety officer, Abington Memorial Hospital. "It is a testament to their dedication to providing leading edge treatments for our patients, as well as the commitment to excellence by our administration, medical staff and all employees."
Abington was ranked number 38 in the "Ear, Nose and Throat" specialty area, with emphasis on "devising new ways to treat hearing loss and sleep disorders." Our otolaryngologists diagnose and treat disorders of the ears, nose, sinuses, throat, larynx and esophagus. This includes evaluating and treating hearing disorders and dizziness; allergy problems of the upper respiratory tract; chronic sinusitis; tumors of the head and neck; or facial reconstructive surgery; as well as conditions related to facial or cervical trauma. They perform procedures such as palatopharyngoplasty, base of tongue reduction and maxillary and mandibular procedures in conjunction with our Sleep Disorders Center specialists.
Hospitals included on the list are scored on several major elements, including reputation, mortality and other factors, such as quality of care (nurse-to-patient ratios) and key technologies. Much of the data comes from the American Hospital Association's 2004 member survey; and rankings are complied by RTI International, a leading research organization in North Carolina.
