About the Program

An in-depth look into how a substance use disorder (SUD) can progress from experimentation to addiction regardless of the substance. Challenges in addressing SUDs and measuring success will be explored. Discussions will focus on how the brain processes pleasurable experiences at various ages throughout adolescence, young adulthood, and adult years. Discussions will also explore how social perception and acceptance of substance use has changed over the years across all age groups. This presentation is designed to provide parents and caregivers with up to date, non-biased information that will increase their knowledge base on the topic.

Program goals and objectives for healthcare providers

After attending this webinar, participants will be able to do the following:

  • Identify the three main factors related to substance use.
  • Identify the three main neurotransmitters involved with substance use disorders.
  • Correctly identify the six stages of substance use
  • Define the term “critical period”

Meet Our Presenter

David FialkoDavid Fialko is an Internationally Certified Prevention Specialist and a Nationally Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist. He has more than 19 years’ experience in the Drug & Alcohol and Mental Health fields, working in treatment, prevention, tobacco cessation and enforcement. David is employed by The Council of Southeast Pennsylvania, Inc. as a Prevention Specialist. His broad range of duties and experience allows him to provide up-to-date and effective presentations on many health-related topics throughout the state and abroad.
