Registration is closed.

Please bring a thick baby blanket and crescent shaped baby "Boppy" style pillow. This class is held in our Willowood Building at 2510 Maryland Road. Dues to construction on this campus, please allow extra time for parking.

If you would to attend this class before your baby is born, we can provide a newborn sized doll for the return demonstrations.

Description

Infant Massage offers benefits for both the baby and parents.

Benefits  for babies may include:

• Provides a special time of communication that fosters love, compassion, and respect
• Improves general well-being
• Improves overall functioning of the gastrointestinal tract
• Promotes relaxation and helps babies self-regulate calm, which reduces crying
• Helps to normalize muscle tone
• Improves circulation
• Enhances immune system function
• Improves midline orientation
• Helps to improve sensory and body awareness
• Enhances neurological development
• Helps baby/child to sleep deeper and more soundly
• Helps to increase oxygen and nutrient flow to cells. Improves respiration
• Helps to improve pain managament; can relieve discomfort from teething,

• Helps with congestion, gas, and colic
• Enhances release of hormones in the body. The growth hormone can be stimulated which  can help with weight gain.
• Reduces levels of cortisol, the stress hormone
• Provides all of the essential indicators of intimate parent-infant bonding and attachment: eye-to-eye, touch, voice, smell, movement, and thermal regulation.
• Stimulates all of the physiological systems. Massage sparks the neurons in their brains to grow and branch out to encompass other neurons

Benefits for parents who massage their babies may include:

• Provides all of the essential indicators of intimate parent-infant bonding and attachment: eye-to-eye, touch, voice, smell, movement, and thermal regulation.
• Encourages pre-verbal communication between caregiver and infant
• Helps parents feel more confident and competent in caring for their children
• Helps parents to ease their stress if they are a working parent and must be separated from their children for extended periods during the day
• Provides parents with one-on-one quiet time or interactive play with their children
• Creates a regular time of closeness and bonding between parent and child.
• Increases parents' self-esteem by reinforcing and enhancing their skills as parents, and validates their role
• Gives parents the tools for understanding their child's unique rhythms and patterns
• Teaches parents how to read their infants' cues and recognize their states of awareness
• Gives parents a special way to interact with their children who may be hospitalized. Helps parents feel a greater part of the healing process
• Daily massage helps parents to unwind and relax
• Provides a positive way for fathers to interact with their infants/children

• Promotes social and emotional development furthering self-awareness and self-regulation

During this class parents will view an instructional video, review of techniques with hands on practice and receive a book for to take home.

You can attend the class before the baby is delivered- we will provide a doll for the hands on practice. A sample of a commonly used massage oil is provided to use in class.

Please bring several baby blankets and a crescent shaped nursing pillow to support the baby during the massage. Taught by an RN certified in Infant Massage, we are pleased to present this class for you and your baby.

Please note- when registering for this class, the fee is per couple. You need only register the expectant mothers name. When you register a support person, our system counts it as 2 couples. There is no need to register an additional name with moms when you register. Thank you.

Our class fees are based on one book/set of handouts per registration. Every registration includes one parent to bring one support person to class.
