Robert K. Josloff, MD
Director, Surgical
Residency Program

Welcome to the Department of Surgery at Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health. I recently became the Program Director and I am excited to build upon the already strong traditions and excellence in the Department of Surgery.

We are a free-standing general surgery training program and have five categorical positions and four preliminary positions. Our residents are well trained in all clinical and cognitive aspects of surgery. The average number of major cases of our finishing Chief Residents is over 900 and they routinely exceed the minimum requirements in all defined categories. The work environment is collegial and supportive and we include our residents in all facets of program management and development. Over the past 5 years, over 80% of our residents have gone on to competitive fellowships in Surgical Oncology, Colon and Rectal Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Trauma/Critical Care. We are proud of our strong affiliations with the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, Drexel University College of Medicine, and Temple University School of Medicine, but we remain a free-standing residency program with a proud tradition.

Located just north of Philadelphia in the beautiful suburb of Abington, Pennsylvania, Abington Hospital is part of the Abington – Jefferson Health that also includes, Abington – Lansdale Hospital, an outpatient clinical campus in Warminster, and an outpatient surgery center. The Surgery Residency Program is well supported as it is one of the flagship programs for Abington Hospital. There are residencies in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Dentistry, and rotating house staff in a variety of other specialties. We are a short car or train ride to downtown Philadelphia enabling us to enjoy all of Philadelphia’s cultural, dining, and sports offerings while living and working in a friendly and charming community. Travel to and from Philadelphia is easy by air, rail, or auto.

In closing, if you are interested in an outstanding clinical training experience, a collegial environment, and a great place to live, the Surgery Residency Program at Abington Hospital may be the place for you.
