Robert K. Josloff, MD
Director, Surgical
Residency Program

Welcome to the Department of Surgery at Jefferson Health – Abington. I am the current Program Director and am continually building upon the already strong traditions and excellence in the Department of Surgery.

We are an independent academic surgery training program with five categorical positions, four preliminary PGY-1 positions and two preliminary PGY-2 positions. We take pride in the diversity of our 31 residents. Our residents are well trained in all clinical and cognitive aspects of general surgery. The residents routinely exceed the minimum requirements in all defined categories. The work environment is collegial and supportive and we include our residents in all facets of program management and development. Over the past 5 years, more than 90% of our residents have gone on to competitive fellowships in Surgical Oncology, Trauma/Critical Care, Colon and Rectal Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery (including Bariatrics), Plastic Surgery and Breast Surgery. We are proud of our strong affiliations with the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, Drexel University College of Medicine, and Temple University School of Medicine, but we remain a free-standing residency program with a proud tradition for more than 60 years. The surgical residents play an important instructional role in the clinical education of medical students as students from several medical schools continuously rotate on all of the surgical services during their third year clerkships or as a sub-Intern during their fourth year. With our robust research and quality and safety curriculums there is also ample opportunity for residents to pursue multiple research projects during their training here.

Located just north of Philadelphia in the beautiful suburb of Abington, Pennsylvania, Jefferson Abington Hospital is part of the Jefferson Health – Abington that also includes, Jefferson Lansdale Hospital, an outpatient clinical campus in Warminster, and an outpatient surgery center. The Surgery Residency Program is well supported as it is one of the flagship programs for Jefferson Abington Hospital. Advanced Practice Professionals (APP’s) within the Dept. of Surgery offer a valuable resource to the surgical team by providing continuity on a service and allows residents to maximize operative and educational opportunities more effectively. There are residencies in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Dentistry, and rotating house staff in a variety of other specialties. We are a short car or train ride to downtown Philadelphia enabling us to enjoy all of Philadelphia’s cultural, dining, and sports offerings while living and working in a friendly and charming community. Travel to and from Philadelphia is easy by air, rail, or auto.

In closing, if you are interested in an outstanding clinical training experience, a collegial environment, and a great place to live, the Surgery Residency Program at Jefferson Abington Hospital may be the place for you.
