Pediatrics Objectives

The Pediatric Curriculum is designed to provide the resident with an opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills relating to the care of the pediatric patient from the neonate to the adolescent.  The program spans three years and offers a broad range of experiences emphasizing ambulatory pediatrics and including the management of children in the emergency trauma center setting, the well and intensive care nurseries and the inpatient service.  Through the ambulatory experience at Abington Family Medicine, the issues of preventative health care and behavioral pediatrics are highlighted.


  1. The resident should be able to complete an appropriate History and Physical examination on all pediatric patients, including the nursery.  At the completion of the History and Physical, the resident should be able to formulate a diagnosis and treatment plan for the patient.
  2. The resident should be able to recognize the seriously ill child, stabilize the child with the necessary assistance, and triage the child appropriately.
  3. The resident should be able to demonstrate skill in taking telephone calls from parents.  The resident should be able to ask the appropriate questions to determine if a problem can be managed by phone or if the patient must be seen and, if so, when.
  4. The resident should be competent in performing the following diagnostic and therapeutic procedures:
    • Venipuncture
    • Arterial puncture
    • Umbilical artery and vein catheterization
    • Lumbar puncture
    • Resuscitation of the newborn
    • CPR in the pediatric patient
  5. The resident should know pediatric dosages of commonly used medications and be able to describe their frequent adverse reactions.
  6. The resident should be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of normal growth and development, outline a reasonable schedule of periodic visits, and anticipatory guidance, and justify an appropriate list of screening procedures, nutritional supplements and immunizations consistent with good health maintenance.
  7. The resident should be able to demonstrate skill in interviewing parents and children, in addressing developmental issues and in teaching parents appropriate parental behaviors.
  8. The resident should demonstrate a thorough understanding of the etiology, diagnosis, and management of the following:

      • School problems and learning disorders, hyperactivity

  9. The resident should be aware of his/her knowledge and limitations in Pediatrics and know when and how to initiate proper consultation.
