Preliminary Residents
The Preliminary Internal Medicine Residency at Jefferson Abington Hospital is highly regarded by our preliminary graduates for being an enjoyable and educational year in preparation for their future sub-specialty training. The 12-month training experience allows preliminary interns to learn the foundations of medicine to help them succeed in their future careers. Preliminary interns will rotate through the same rotations as our categorical residents, including General Medicine Service, Critical Care Service, Night Service, and Electives. Preliminary interns have the added flexibility of more elective time than categorical interns in order to pursue their own academic interests.

With the guidance from the ACGME's six competencies as a method of educating and evaluating residents in internal medicine (Medical Knowledge, Patient Care, Professionalism, Interpersonal & Communication Skills, Practice-Based Learning & Improvement, and Systems-Based Practice), preliminary interns will complete the program and emerge a competent, compassionate physician ready for the next step in their training careers.
