Salary and Benefits
for 2018 – 2019
All residents are covered by a basic life insurance policy according to the following schedule:
Limited supplemental life insurance may be purchased for yourself, your spouse, same sex domestic partner, or your children who are under age 19 (23 if full time students).
Abington – Jefferson Health offers a flexible benefit program that allows you to tailor your benefit package to meet your individual needs. This covers both medical and dental insurances. Plans have a small fee attached based on your selection. Flexible spending accounts are available through Discovery Benefits.
All house staff are covered by the Cassatt RRG, Inc. The hospital purchases continuous coverage for all events that occur during a resident's or fellow's tenure at this institution. Coverage for moonlighting activities has to be cleared with the respective program director and hospital administration.
Each resident and fellow is issued an individual disability insurance policy, which will pay for 60 percent of the base salary, subject to a maximum schedule amount of $3,000 per month, and will continue coverage for two (2) years. This policy is transferable upon completion of residency training.
403B Tax-Sheltered Annuity
You may participate in a savings plan with Wells Fargo that permits you to make a tax-deferred investment of up to a certain dollar amount determined by the tax laws in effect for the current year. Federal Income tax is deferred until money is withdrawn.
Relocation costs: The hospital will pay reasonable relocation costs (an average of $500 for a move within the immediate area, up to $1,000 for an out-of-state move).
Loans: The hospital will provide zero-interest loans up to $2,000 at the start of the residency or fellowship program (payments are spread over 12 months).
Meals: On-call meals are paid for by separate stipend twice a year. This covers dinner, midnight snack and breakfast when on-call. There is a 7% discount in the cafeteria available to all employees provided you sign-up.
Uniforms/lab coats: Four lab coats are provided for first-year residents, and laundry of uniforms is provided for all residents and fellows without charge. Two additional lab coats are provided to fourth-sixth year residents and fellows. Scrubs are distributed by departmental policy.
Electronic Handheld Device: Residents and fellows are provided with a reimbursement stipend when the completed request form is submitted.
Vacation time: Each resident and fellow is entitled to 15 days of PTO (paid time off). Residents and fellows must follow individual program policy for requested time off. PTO not taken in any contract year may not be carried forward and taken in another contract year.
Conferences: Each residency and fellowship program has funding arrangements for residents to attend conferences outside of the hospital. Funds are distributed by departmental policy.
USMLE Step 3 and COMLEX Level 3: All first-year preliminary residents will be reimbursed for taking USMLE-Step 3 or COMLEX Level 3 if taken during the first year of residency and prior to graduating AH ($800.00). All residents continuing at AH in their PGY2 year will be reimbursed if the exam is taken within the first 3 months of the PGY2 year.
Licensure: AH will cover the cost for all AH licensure renewals. Those residents and fellows who are eligible to apply for their DEA license ($731.00) and unrestricted license (cost varies) will be reimbursed for the cost of obtaining the license for the portion of time during your residency training.
ACLS/BLS: All new residents and fellows are given the opportunity to become certified at no cost during orientation. Current residents are provided with re-certification training every two years.
Counseling: All residents and fellows have access to physicians and advanced practice professionals through the Medical Education Committee, Health Assistance Committee, or Carebridge (Employee Assistance), a free work/life benefit is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with a wide variety of resources and referral services.
Daycare: AH has opened the Gerstadt Childcare and Educational Center, offering discounted childcare to AH employees. It is located directly across the street from the Emergency Department.
Fitness Center: On-site fitness center opened in 2008. No membership fee for residents.
Parking: Convenient on-site parking is available for all residents at a charge of $15/month.
VISA sponsorship: The hospital sponsors H-1B and J-1 visa's
Notary public: On-site services are free of charge.
Medical library / resource center: Computer access available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Instructions available upon request.
Employee discounts at local businesses: Cellular telephones, restaurants, automotive services, dry cleaning services, grocery service, amusement parks, etc.
Credit Union: All residents and fellows are eligible to join Philadelphia Federal Credit Union and have funds directly deposited into a variety of accounts.
