Today marks the 100th Anniversary of Abington Memorial Hospital. When we opened our doors on May 15, 1914, we had just 48 beds, 22 physicians, six graduate nurses and nine student nurses. The average life expectancy was 48 years for males and 51 years for females, and the leading causes of death were flu, pneumonia and tuberculosis. Medicine has come a long way, and so have we.

Through the years, generations of families have placed their trust in Abington. With sound guidance from hospital trustees, a supportive and committed community, and the dedication of our talented physicians, staff and volunteers, the hospital enters its second century stronger than ever. By working together, we remain focused on our vision to be the most trusted healthcare partner while fulfilling our mission to promote healing, prevent harm and be kind.

Celebrating 100 years at AMHOn behalf of the 6,000 employees, 1,400 physicians and 1,100 volunteers at Abington Health, we thank you for placing your trust in us and for the privilege of caring for you and your loved ones. We look forward to providing the highest level of health care to our community for the next 100 years.

Sincerely,

Laurence M. Merlis
President and Chief Executive Officer
