Robotic-Assisted Heart Surgery
Robotic surgery for cardiac conditions is an advanced technique for conducting complex procedures while reducing trauma to patients.
Surgeons at the Abington Heart and Vascular Institute – Jefferson Health are specially trained in robotic technology. We are one of only a few centers in the Philadelphia area to use the newest FDA-approved robotic surgical system.
Robotic Surgery Technology
Our robotic system gives the cardiac surgeon a 3D view, similar to traditional surgery but with greater depth perception. Special robotic instruments enable a laparoscopic, or minimally invasive, approach through tiny incisions. Magnification is 10 times greater than the human eye.
The surgeon views an image of the surgical area while operating in real time, with special instruments. The system replicates the surgeon's movements but never makes decisions on its own or performs any maneuver outside of the surgeon's direct control.
Using a robotic system enables greater surgical precision, increased range of motion, improved dexterity, enhanced visualization and improved access. Those advantages give patients less blood loss, less pain and scarring, shorter hospital stays and a quicker return to daily activities.
