The diabetes Education* Services at the Diabetes Centers of Abington Health are recognized by the American Diabetes Association. Education, classes and services are offered at five convenient locations, including Abington Health Center -Schilling in Willow Grove; Lansdale Hospital; Abington Health Center -Warminster; Abington Family Medicine in Jenkintown; and Family Practice Associates of Upper Dublin in Fort Washington.
The Diabetes Centers use a team approach for education and counseling, with the patient as the key member of the team. Registered nurses and registered dietitians, who are also certified diabetes educators, are dedicated to helping each person gain control of their diabetes while maintaining an optimal state of health and well being. Together, the team designs an individualized plan that matches your lifestyle and educational needs.
By participating in our programs, you will learn:
- How easy it is to check your blood glucose,
- How a meal plan helps control blood glucose,
- How the latest information can help prevent complications, and
- How to use blood glucose results for better self care.
Our program is an excellent resource for people with diabetes at any stage, through both inpatient and outpatient care, including those:
- admitted to the hospital for illness or surgery
- newly diagnosed with diabetes
- in non-optimal metabolic control
- who want to prevent diabetic complications
- who need behavior change reinforcement
- interested in learning more about the latest diabetes management techniques
- who have had a change in their diabetes medication
- requiring meal planning and weight management reinforcement

Most insurance plans cover diabetes education and nutrition counseling, although some require a physician's referral for these services. Insurance information and required referrals must be presented at your appointment. Financial assistance is available for those in need.

The services offered at The Diabetes Centers of Abington Health cover a wide range of topics including meal planning, diabetes medication, preventing complications, exercise and making adjustments for daily living. Program options include:
Preventing Diabetes: Are you at for risk of developing type 2 diabetes? Attend this interactive workshop and learn lifestyle changes that can help decrease your risk. This class is for adults who may have risk factors, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, weight issues and family history of diabetes.
National Diabetes Prevention Program at Abington Health
If you are at risk for getting diabetes, have pre-diabetes, or had gestational diabetes, you may be eligible to participate in Abington Health’s National Diabetes Prevention Program. The program is free of charge and follows the successful format used by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Meetings are one hour per week for 16 weeks followed by six one-hour monthly meetings. A lifestyle health coach supports each individual throughout their journey to successful weight loss and better health.

Comprehensive Diabetes Education Program
Intensified Insulin Self-management Training
Four or more sessions where you will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to adjust your own insulin in relation to day-to-day situations and carbohydrate intake.
Nutrition Counseling for Diabetes
One or more private sessions with a registered dietitian specializing in diabetes management. Individual food preferences and lifestyle are incorporated into meal planning strategies that help you improve blood glucose control.
Additional Educational Services
Additional educational services include insulin syringe preparation and self-injection, gestational diabetes management, insulin pump initiation and continuous glucose sensor monitoring. For more information about any service, call 215-672-0899.
