We treat melanoma and other skin cancers with specialist expertise and personalized care. Our patients also benefit from access to clinical trials for melanoma.
Honored for Cancer Expertise
The Commission on Cancer, American College of Surgeons, gave us its 2012 Outstanding Achievement Award. The Rosenfeld Cancer Center is one of only three Pennsylvania centers to receive that honor for cancer treatment excellence.
Diagnosing Skin Cancer
Early diagnosis of skin cancer is important. After physical examination of the skin, tests for skin cancer may include CT scan, skin biopsy and sentinel lymph node biopsy.
Our cancer team treats patients with melanoma. Abington – Jefferson Health dermatologists and Mohs surgeons provide treatment for those diagnosed with non-melanoma (basal cell or squamous cell) skin cancer, unless those cancers need more specialized attention by our cancer physicians.
We also provide consultations (second opinions) for patients originally diagnosed elsewhere.
Skin Cancer Treatments
Melanoma surgery removes skin cancer, some surrounding area and may remove lymph nodes. Other treatments may follow.
For non-melanoma skin cancer, Mohs micrographic surgery offers the highest cure rate of any treatment. Abington has highly skilled Mohs surgeons who perform this surgery on an outpatient basis.
Chemotherapy and targeted therapy may be used for melanoma. Medicines such as interferon and interleukin, which work against melanoma through the immune system, may be included in the treatment plan.
Before starting any cancer treatment, talk with your oncologist about whether the therapy could affect your fertility. Our reproductive endocrinologists help with fertility preservation before treatment or appropriate infertility treatment if cancer therapy has already been given.
