Ways to Reduce Stroke Risks

Learn the signs and symptoms of stroke.

You can take action to reduce your stroke risks.

Get immediate medical follow-up for any stroke symptoms, even if they go away.

  • Quit smoking; ask your doctor for help.
  • Improve food choices to keep cholesterol low.
  • Control high blood pressure; check it regularly.
  • Monitor and control diabetes.
  • Take medications as prescribed.
  • Be more physically active; exercise.
  • Control your weight.
  • Limit alcohol use to no more than two drinks daily for men, one for women who are not pregnant.
  • Do not abuse any drugs; get help to quit.
  • Learn your family history of stroke, high blood pressure and heart disease.
  • Talk with your healthcare professional about your stroke risks.
