From Excruciating Pain to Normal Life —
Laminectomy Patient Urges Others Not to Hesitate to Have Surgery if Needed
Edwin Axel, 84, of Wyndmoor, lived through debilitating pain due to spinal stenosis for six months. “It’s hard to explain that something you did without thinking you couldn’t do any more. I looked at people and wondered how they were able to walk,” says Mr. Axel. “I had to think about how I could cross the room to turn on a light.“
“I was scared to death of having surgery. But when I met with Dr. Guy Lee, I was ready immediately to have the laminectomy operation,” Edwin, a Korean War veteran, says. “I love the guy and felt confident he could help me.
“I had the surgery in April. When I woke up, I got out of bed and used the walker right away, and walked up and down the floor three times,” he continues. “A nurse asked why I was crying – I told her it was happy tears. I had instant relief from the unbearable pain that had gone up and down my legs, my whole back.” Mr. Axel has returned to working at his business, Edon Corporation in Horsham, which designs and fabricates specialty items in fiberglass. “I have since told three people who are having similar pain to have the surgery – you don’t have to live like that. Get relief now!”
