Abington Memorial Hospital Receives Chest Pain Center Accreditation
Abington Memorial Hospital has received Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC), an international not-for-profit organization committed to leading the fight to eliminate heart disease as the number one cause of death worldwide.
Hospitals receiving this accreditation have achieved a higher level of expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with symptoms of a heart attack, according to the SCPC.
Abington Memorial Hospital Honored with Mission: Lifeline Quality Achievement Award
The American Heart Association has awarded Abington Memorial Hospital the Mission: Lifeline® Bronze Plus Receiving Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who suffer severe heart attacks.
Each year in the United States, approximately 300,000 people have a heart attack caused by a complete blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment. To prevent death, it’s critical to immediately restore blood flow, either by surgically opening the blocked vessel or by giving clot-busting medication.
2013 Abington Memorial Hospital Recognized for Heart Failure Care
Abington Memorial Hospital has been recognized for successfully implementing a higher standard of care for heart failure patients through the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines®–Heart Failure quality improvement program.
Abington Memorial Hospital, a Gold level recipient, is among 299 hospitals receiving a Get With the Guidelines–Heart Failure award this year. More than 1,000 hospitals received awards for their achievements in heart, stroke and resuscitation care. All recipients are featured in a special advertisement in the August issue of US News & World Report’s “America’s Best Hospitals.”
2013 Abington Memorial Hospital Recognized for Quality in Cardiac Care
Independence Blue Cross has recognized Abington Memorial Hospital as one of the first hospitals in the nation to receive a Blue Distinction Center+SM designation in the area of cardiac care, as part of the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® program.
Blue Distinction Centers are hospitals shown to deliver quality specialty care based on objective, transparent measures for patient safety and health outcomes that were developed with input from the medical community. This year, the national program has added a new designation level, Blue Distinction Centers+, to recognize hospitals that deliver both quality and cost-efficient specialty care.
2012 Joint Commission Advanced Certification for Ventricular Assist Device (VAD)
The Pilla Heart Center has received advanced certification for Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) from The Joint Commission.
2011 Joint Commission Gold Seal for Heart Failure Program
AMH has earned The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for its Comprehensive Heart Failure Program by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care. The certification award recognizes Abington’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards.
The hospital underwent a rigorous on-site survey to achieve certification. Joint Commission surveyors evaluated compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients and families, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management.
2010 Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care
As one of the region's leaders in cardiac care, AMH received the designation of Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care® by Independence Blue Cross. Originally certified as a Blue Distinction Center in 2006, AMH’s Cardiac Care received redesignation in 2010.
Blue Distinction Centers for Cardiac Care demonstrate their commitment to quality care, resulting in better overall outcomes for cardiac patients. Abington Memorial Hospital meets evidence-based clinical criteria, developed in collaboration with expert physicians and medical organizations, including the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), and is subject to periodic re-evaluation as criteria continues to evolve.

"This includes establishing one of the region's first open-heart programs more than a decade ago, breakthroughs and firsts in complex valve surgery, as well as leading-edge interventional treatments for atrial fibrillation and congestive heart failure."
Blue Distinction is a designation awarded by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality healthcare. The designation is based on rigorous, evidence-based selection criteria established in collaboration with expert physicians' and medical organizations' recommendations. Today, more than 1,600 Blue Distinction Center designations have been awarded to facilities nationwide, providing consumers with a framework for making informed decisions on where to go for specialty care in the areas of bariatric surgery, cardiac care, complex and rare cancers, knee and hip replacement, spine surgery and transplants.
