Renovated Unit at Abington Hospital Assists Patients in Reacquiring Daily Living Skills

Acute Rehab UnitABINGTON, PA (April 5, 2016) – People who have suffered debilitating health problems now have another option for relearning how to engage in the activities of daily living.

Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health has completed renovations to its Acute Rehabilitation Unit, which opened to patients last week. The fully updated 23-bed unit features a modernized gym and dining room, as well as an expanded Occupational Therapy area that includes an Activities of Daily Living suite.

Patients typically treated in this unit include those recovering from disabling illnesses or medical procedures, such as stroke, brain surgery, bilateral hip/knee replacement and amputation, as well as those who have experienced reduced physical and/or mental capacity due to a prolonged hospital stay.

The Acute Rehabilitation Unit’s new Activities of Daily Living suite is equipped with patient therapy stations – including a washer/dryer, kitchen sink and bathroom – designed to restore and enhance everyday living skills so patients can acquire independence needed after discharge.

Abington’s Rehabilitation Medicine program provides patients with physical, occupational and speech therapy. A dedicated team provides personalized care and therapy necessary for patients to recover lost functional skills, allowing them to return to their normal daily routine, thereby improving quality of life.

“Abington’s new Rehab Unit will allow our therapists and physicians to care for patients even more effectively, and in turn achieve the best patient outcomes possible,” said Steven Levin, MD, chief of the Rehabilitation Medicine Division at Abington Hospital. “We’re thrilled to have improved tools at our disposal as we work to return our patients to their normal lives.”

The renovations follow work that was done at Abington – Lansdale Hospital, which had its six-bed Acute Rehabilitation Unit renovated last year.
