Abington Memorial Hospital Installs Murals Specially Designed for Baby’s First “Selfie”
ABINGTON, PA (July 21, 2014)—The popularity of the selfie is exploding, from Ellen DeGeneres’ famous selfie at this year’s Oscars to a new show on ABC called #Selfie about a 20-something woman who goes overboard on social media.
To keep its new moms engaged and spread the word about maternity services on social media, Abington Memorial Hospital has embarked on a new initiative called Baby’s First Selfie. Its Public Relations and Marketing Department wanted to step up their social media efforts for maternity patients who, all told, deliver more than 4,600 babies per year.
Calling on the design and creative expertise of their advertising agency, AB&C from Wilmington, DE, Abington added unique murals to their three post-partum units with the intention of providing a colorful background for baby’ first selfie which could then be shared by patients and family members on a variety of social media sites.
“Our maternity patients are very much engaged in social media,” said Beth Ann Neill, corporate director, Public Relations and Marketing, Abington Health. “The idea of baby’s first selfie mural is a perfect fit for our patients. We are very excited to watch how people use the murals and how they share their photos on social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. I’m sure it will be the first of many photos our moms will share of their new babies on social media.”
One of the large-scale murals measures 8.5 feet wide x 7.6 feet deep, and two murals are 12 ft wide x 9 feet deep. Each features a blossoming tree, a stork carrying a bundle, and birds flying by with the words: “Having a baby changes your life forever. Forever never looked so beautiful.” Prominent on the mural are the following hash tags: #itsaboy; #itsagirl; #bornatAbington; #babysfirstselfie; and #abingtonbaby.
Not the First Selfies Being Promoted by Abington Health
In the spring, the PR/Marketing Department had the health system’s logo mark – a steeple – fabricated for use in employee selfies at its 100th Anniversary on May 15. Employees from a variety of departments took photos of themselves and co-workers during a special event celebrating the hospital’s history, then posted them on Facebook. The four- foot high steeple was also used by carnival goers at the June Fete Village Fair who used it as a backdrop for photos they took at the event.
