This class is recommended by the hospital Board Certified Lactation Consultants for any mother wanting to breastfeed her newborn. Breastfeeding 1 is taught by an RN, IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) It is important for new parents to learn about breastfeeding for the first 2 to 4 weeks after the baby is born as this is a very important time to build moms milk supply. Topics covered include- importance of a proper latch, how often should a newborn nurse, how can you determine if things are going well, when and where to get breastfeeding assistance. Information about how your milk supply is made, preventing and treating sore nipples, signs and symptoms of mastitis and other concerns you should be aware. The class will help build your awareness of what to expect as a new mom and can increase your confidence about breastfeeding your baby. Support persons are very important to a breastfeeding mother and should attend this class with mom. Moms are asked to bring a doll or teddy bear for the hands on part of the class discussing how to hold your newborn while nursing.
Please note- the focus of this class is on breastfeeding for the first month. Breastfeeding 2 is another class we proudly offer to discuss breast pumping topics including choosing a breast pump and storing your milk.
Please note- when registering for this prenatal class, the fee is per couple. You need only register the expectant mothers name. When you register a support person, our system counts it as 2 couples. There is no need to register an additional name with moms when you register. Thank you.
