ACGME Core Competencies
and Milestones

AMH's focus: Interpersonal and
Communication Skills

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Abington is particularly interested in promoting and honing good communication skills in our residents. Most clinicians and educators firmly believe that proficiency in the communication competency (one of the six ACGME competencies) is critical to one's success in medicine from diagnosis to the management of patients. The problem is that unlike the other competencies of medical knowledge, patient care, professionalism, practice-based learning and systems based practice, there are few assessment methods to evaluate the communication competency in the actual care of patients. At Abington, the residency program employed several methods to educate and evaluate the residents. While spending time on the chiefs or "Excel" floors rotation, daily discussions around the communication competency occur with faculty, residents and students.  Critical reflection on cases is done and residents learn how to engage this process in real time.
