A Message from the Program Director
It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the Abington Health Bariatric Fellowship Program. I established this program in 2011 with the intention of achieving higher educational goals for residents interested in obesity treatment, improving the quality of care in our community, and instilling our surgical expertise into young surgeons interested in battling the obesity epidemic. Bariatric surgery is truly making a difference in our patients’ lives.
This is a busy and vibrant one-year program based on the Fellowship Council and ACGME core competencies. The rich experience during fellowship provides exposure to a variety of bariatric operations: namely vertical sleeve gastrectomies, gastric bypasses, duodenal switches, revisions and conversions from band, bypass or VBG’s, but also a wide range of operative techniques such as laparoscopic, open and robotic. Each year our fellow is expected to achieve about 400 procedures per year.
Our office experience is unsurpassed. The preoperative and postoperative care of our patients is in the hands of the most experienced and dedicated team of nurses, managers, and support personnel. The office is located in a beautiful area within Philadelphia’s suburbs, and an entire level of the building - 9000 sq ft – is dedicated solely to bariatric patient care. Our ever-expanding medical weight loss management program is picking up speed as well.
Our fellow is constantly academically stimulated. S/he is encouraged and has appropriate support to be involved in teaching residents and staff, participate in conferences, and present research projects at national/regional conferences and submit manuscripts for publication.
Our 650 bed hospital is very conveniently located in the wonderful suburbs of Philadelphia. Downtown Philadelphia is only about 20 minutes away, the beach can be reached within 1.5 hours, the mountains in 1.5 hours going the opposite direction, and finally New York City is only 2 hours away. You will have the opportunity to enjoy either the inner city life or suburban lifestyle, depending on your preferences.
If you feel that you could be a good match for our program please apply through the Fellowship Council Match web side. I would be excited to work with you to reach our common goal.
